4th Annual Scratch Competition Held at GA Tech
The Institute for Computing Education (ICE) at Georgia Tech held their 4th annual Scratch competition this fall. Barbara Ericson, the director of ICE, along with STARS students, Laura Boullain, Cayla Bullinger, Kyle Hosford, Srayva Kotte, Rita Kozlov, Jennifer Yim, and other outreach students judged over 70 entries for this competition. The competition had divisions for students in elementary, middle and high school. Students could enter as a group or as an individual. The categories were animations and games.
Entries were judged on their appeal, creativity, originality, technical merit, and how well they followed good programming practices. Prizes were awarded to the highest scoring entries in each category, if there were at least 5 entries in that category. In addition, prizes were given for Most Artistic, Best Comedy, Best Dance, Best use of Sound, and Most Original Idea.
Current STARS projects for the semester are to create Scratch projects that help girls in Haiti learn typing and English. As a result additional prizes were offered for the Best Educational Game and the Best Educational Animation for the girls in Haiti.
